The artist

Bria Edwards

A Washington, D.C. based painter and photographer, uses texture and bold colors to present Black life in an multilayered, truthful and authentic manner. Through these mediums, she strives to debunk the monolithic narrative of what Black folks do in their spare time. Working through the Black female lens, Edwards captures the nuances of those who graciously participate in her process, bringing them to life eternally.

The Black Equestrian

Black equestrians have a rich but often overlooked history in the world of horseback riding and competitive equestrian sports. Despite facing significant barriers of racism, economic hardships, and a lack of representation, Black riders have consistently played a pivotal role in shaping the equestrian community.

More Time In A Day

“Bria Edwards: More Time In A Day” curated by Dr. Lauren Davidson, captures Edwards’ view of Black life growing up in D.C. adjacent Prince George’s County, Maryland. Known for decades as the most affluent African American county in the nation, P.G. County has often been associated with Black elitism. Edwards chooses to portray a lesser-celebrated aspect of suburban life which magnifies leisure through the lens of the county’s residents, juxtaposing Black life in the county against that of the nearby city. Each story on canvas communicates the unceremonious nature of those portrayed and their unbothered spirit.
